I’m a second generation Italian here in Canada, in Italian my name is Aprilia but my parents named me April. Apparently my name is derived from the Latin expression Venus Aprilia, which means “Venus Fertilises”. Venus is a Roman goddess. Since she has become one of the most widely referenced deities of Greco-Roman mythology and is the embodiment of love and sexuality.
Before my high school English class, I had no idea about my name’s background. It was pretty embarassing though being 17/18 and reading about a nude Roman goddess who is linked to my name. But thankfully that’s over now.
I was not born in April, but I do love the month’s connotations and links to my name. Rebirth, prosperity, beauty, desire and victory all resonate with me. So thanks for being here, I’ll be meandering through what this all means in a modern life, for love and beauty drive us all.
